Man claims he was kicked off Southwest flight for being overweight

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A passenger on Southwest Airlines says he was hassled on a flight because of his weight.

Matthew Harper was on a flight Sunday from Midway Airport to Denver. He says he boarded the plane, and then was booted off and given a talking-to.

Harper is from Texas and weighs about 340 pounds. He says after getting kicked off, a Southwest employee gave him the business about its policy of advising so-called "customers of size" to buy two seats.

He was eventually let back on.

Harper says the flight wasn't even full and there was an empty seat next to him.

"34 years old and I've never been humiliated like this in my life," Harper says. "I mean, when I got back on the plane only thing I could do is just put my head down."

Harper says he filed a complaint with Southwest and was offered $100, but turned it down and will now talk with an attorney.

Southwest says it plans to look into what happened.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
