New commercial bike laws in New York City

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Businesses that use bicycles for commercial purposes in New York City must now follow new laws starting Tuesday.

The changes by the Dept. of Transportation are intended to help keep pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists safe.

The law requires that each commercial bicyclist have a unique 3-digit number for ID purposes.  They will be required to wear a reflective vest with the name of the business and the identification number.  They need to be at least one inch in height and readable from at least 10-feet.

They are also required to attach a metal or plastic tag to the bike with the business name and identification number.

If someone leaves, business owners may reassign that number and record the change in their log.

The law does not ban delivery bikes from hanging bags from handlebars but it is recommended that business owners provide a basket or pannier to hold deliveries.

The law does not allow delivery bikes to be electric.

Violators can face fines of up to $250 and 15 days in jail.

Some of the new requirements include:

  • Bicycle operators must ride in the direction of traffic and yield to pedestrians.
  • Bicycle operators must stay off the sidewalk.
  • Bicycle operators must stop at all red lights and stop signs.
  • Bicycle operators must wear a retro-reflective jacket, vest, or other apparel on the upper part of such operator's body as the outermost garment while making deliveries.
  • Business' name and such bicycle operator's individual identification number must be displayed.
  • Each bicycle operator shall be required to complete a bicycle safety course provided by the Dept. of Transportation.

Cumberbatch only spoke during the brief hearing to say he understood the charge. His attorney said they wouldn't comment out of respect for the police officer's family.

Fruit packaged by the Wawona Packing Company out of Cutler, California and sold at stores across the country is being voluntarily recalled. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there is a possibility the recalled products may be contaminated with listeria. No illnesses have been linked to the recall. Certain lots of peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots sold at Trader Joe's, Costco, Sam's Club and Fresh Direct could be contaminated with the dangerous food-borne pathogen.
