FOX Confidential: The Search For Melanie Colon's Killer

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"That was the hardest day of my life," said Zoraida Miranda, discussing the day in May of 2012 where she had to identify the body of her daughter, 22-year-old Melanie Colon.

It was Mother's Day.  Instead of celebrating with her daughter, the family began preparations for a funeral.

"It's hard for me being a mother of three kids now but when I lost my only daughter I just went down," she said.

It was May 8th when the family last saw Melanie.  She stepped out from her North Philadelphia home and into the car of close friend, Reynaldo Torres.  They were going to hang out for a few hours.  It turned into a few days, with neither being heard from.

Then, someone comes across a body in Philadelphia's Juniata section.  It was identified as Melanie.

"She was a strong girl. Melanie was a great person," said an emotional Miranda.

Philadelphia Police say she had been shot several times.

Torres' car was found in nearby Feltonville but he hasn't been seen since the two disappeared nearly a year ago.

The Colon family told FOX29 they don't accuse Torres of anything, and they want him found safe.  They also believe locating him may mean finding out what happened to Melanie.

Philadelphia Homicide Captain James Clark told FOX Confidential Torres is still considered a missing person to this day.  He is not a suspect.

They say the trail has gone cold in the search for whoever killed Melanie and they're pushing for the public's help.

"We believe someone knows who did this.  We need them to come forward and provide the Homicide Unit with the information," he said.

Melanie's brother Ralphiee Colon has taken to Facebook, creating a group dedicated to her memory and pushing to keep her case in the public eye.

"You got to fight for what you love and I love my sister.  I'm going to fight for my sister," he said.

A $20,000 reward has been offered for any information that brings Melanie's killer to justice and solves the case.

The family hopes investigators get a break soon.  Next month marks the 1-year anniversary of her death.
