UFC: Brendan Schaub Critical of Mir’s Game Plan

Posted: Updated:

He has called Frank Mir an idol, but on Saturday UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub was critical of the former champion's game plan versus Daniel Cormier.

Serving as an analyst for FOX 11's Cage Talk, Schaub was asked what he thought about Mir's game plan.

"Hated it," Schaub said.  "Let's be honest, I could not stand it."

"Why would you just stand there and get beat up on the cage?" Schaub continued.  "Why not at least drop down and try to pull half guard?"

In preparation for Cormier, Mir, for the first time in his career, moved his fight camp from his hometown of Las Vegas to train with the famed Greg Jackson team in New Mexico.

"You go to Albuquerque, you change camps trying to get a new look and this is what you do?" Schaub said.  "You got 8 weeks in Albuquerque and this is what you brought to the octagon? It's disappointing and I'm the biggest Frank Mir fan around."

In regards to Benson Henderson, Schaub, a Denver native, recounts his first encounter with the current lightweight king.

"Ben and I go back a long way, probably about 7 years ago my very first day in the gym, I'm pulling the door open and Ben Henderson walks through," Schaub said.  "He'd only been there about a week, it's my first day and we kind of hit it off and started talking and I ask him, ‘What's your goal?' He says, ‘Get to the UFC.'"

"He asks me, ‘What's yours?'" Schaub said.  "'Get to the UFC.'  I don't see him for about 6 years later when we're both in the UFC and doing pretty well."

The Fox card brought with it a big shakeup in FOX 11's portion of the UFC Fighter Rankings.

Regarding Gilbert Melendez, the close decision loss moved him down from first to third just ahead of his longtime nemesis, Josh Thomson.

Thomson who was previously unranked by FOX 11 made a tremendous leap up the lightweight rankings to fourth.

The 155'er known as "The Punk" did what no man has ever been able to Nate Diaz in any weight class: stop him with strikes.

In his 24 previous professional battles, Diaz had only been stopped once and that was via submission.

Thomson was able to wobble the extremely durable Diaz with a clean head kick, before landing two right hooks that would send Diaz sprawling on the mat.

Thomson would land a few more ground strikes before the referee stopped the fight.  The stoppage came at the exact same moment Diaz's corner was throwing in the towel.

The impressive performance, coupled with a resume featuring wins over Gilbert Melendez, Gesias Cavalcante, Nam Phan, K.J. Noons and Hermes Franca, launched Thomson into FOX 11's top five lightweights.
