GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Gwinnett County police say one of their officers shot and killed a home invasion suspect on Monday morning. They say two kids were home alone at the time, and they heard the man trying to break in.

It happened at the Woodland Ridge Apartments on Tree Trail Parkway in unincorporated Norcross.  Investigators say the two children were inside, and they were getting ready to catch a school bus when the suspect came into their apartment.   Their mother had already left the house for work.

Police say the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Eric Andrews of Atlanta, knocked on the door of the apartment. The children, who are 11 and 13, did not open the door. The children saw the man attempt to break in the apartment, according to police.

Both kids made it out of the apartment safely and they were not injured.  They went to a neighbor for help, and that neighbor called police.

The first officer to arrive at the scene was confronted by the suspect on his way out of the apartment. Authorities said that Andrews had a crowbar-type weapon when he charged the officer.  Cpl. Edwin Ritter says that suspect "presented a deadly force confrontation with the police officer," and the officer was forced to shoot the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he later died.  The officer was not injured.

The investigation into the incident continues.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
