FD: 10-year-old boy admits to setting deadly fire

PHOENIX -

Crews worked through the night investigating a house fire near 35th Avenue and Coronado that left one person dead. Firefighters were called to the scene around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

11 people -- 6 adults and five children -- were inside the two-story home when the fire broke out. The 11th person, a man in his 50s, was found dead inside.

Fire Department officials say a 10-year-old boy admitted to them that he was playing with a lighter in the house and somehow he lit a cloth on fire. It spread quickly and he was unable to extinguish it.

The family says there were smoke detectors in the home, but fire officials say those claims are unclear at this time.

There were a lot of jerry-rigged additions in the home and firefighters believe there were no permits for them.  That means the man who died may not have had a properly-designed path to escape.

The additions also complicated matters for firefighters.

"They're nice people," said a neighbor.  "That's all I can say.  I've known them 20 years."

Fire Department officials say the family now needs to find a new place to live since the house is a total loss.  The Red Cross is working with the family to find shelter and other supplies.

Authorities say the boy will be placed in a juvenile fire setters program, which is common in these types of cases. Phoenix Police have taken over the investigation.
