SELLS, Ariz. (AP) - The former chairman of the Tohono O'odham Nation has died.

Officials with the southern Arizona tribe on Friday announced the death of Augustine B. Lopez Sr.

Lopez's age and cause of death weren't immediately available.

He served as Tohono O'odham Nation chairman from 1971 to 1973.

Tribal officials say Lopez was an Air Force veteran who later worked as a cowboy, rancher and an irrigator.

Lopez went on serve as director of the tribe's work experience program and established its property and supply department.
