Arizona agents arrest 231 as part of fugitive roundup

PHOENIX -

State and federal law enforcement agents have arrested 231 people as part of a fugitive roundup in Maricopa and Pinal counties.

The weeklong "Operation Justice V" effort focused on those with outstanding felony warrants. About half of the warrants that were served this week involved drug-related offenses.

At least three suspects were arrested while FOX 10 cameras were rolling.  One suspect was wanted for theft and U.S. Marshals say he has a criminal history of stealing.

"He wasn't home at the time.. he arrived on the scene as we were knocking on the door and he was taken into custody as well," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Kevin Keefe.  "We basically go around on these roundups and work with our joint partners in state and local partnerships and pick up as many people as possible."

Authorities also arrested a man accused of arson and another of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old child.

The U.S. Marshals Service says the operation involved more than 150 agents from 30 departments throughout the two counties, including the Chandler and Surprise police departments.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Police are responding to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags have been raised. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appear to have been removed. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m., reported the Associated Press.

Polluted Gowanus Canal doesn't scare away neighborhood development

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
