CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Maywood mother and her boyfriend allegedly beat the woman's 1-year-old child to death because he was "crying and whining" and then concocted a false story to tell authorities about his disappearance.

Lakesha Baker and her live-in boyfriend, Michael Scott, repeatedly rehearsed that they'd tell police Bryeon Hunter went missing after three Hispanic males battered Baker and sped off in a car, Cook County prosecutors said Saturday.

The couple even went over the phony story with Hunter's 4-year-old brother.

But the brother told police that he knew Bryeon left the house with Scott and when Scott returned, Bryeon was not with him, prosecutors said.

Baker, 22, also ending up admitting she lied to police, prosecutors said. And Scott, 21, allegedly told detectives he knew Bryeon was being abused but didn't do anything to stop it.

Bryeon, who has been reported missing since Tuesday, has not been found.

Baker allegedly admitted she started beating Bryeon over a period time as recently as April 15

"She indicated that she beat her son with a belt because he was crying and whiny," an assistant state's attorney told Judge Laura Sullivan.

"She also stated that she beat the victim on 4/15/13 while co-defendant Scott covered the child's mouth with his hand and held him down while she beat him with a belt."

The child ended up on the bathroom floor, "moaning and having difficulty breathing." Bryeon's torso was purple and bruised. He could not move," prosecutors said.

Sullivan ordered Baker held without bond. Scott was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail.
