Child's Death Probed After Parents Call Funeral Home First

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We're following a developing story out of Northeast Philadelphia, where an 8-month old baby died, and this isn't the first child death to happen in this family.

It was actually the funeral home who called police, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen reported live Friday night from Rhawnhurst.

This time, an 8-month-old baby boy mysteriously lost his life.

The parents were already convicted of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment when their 2-year-old boy passed away in 2009.

A neighbor said he knew something was wrong when he saw police outside the home of Herbert and Catherine Schaible on Thursday night.

But sources say when the baby passed away, the Schaibles called a funeral home instead of calling 911.

That's when the funeral home notified the medical examiner and police, launching a probe into the child's cause of death.

This investigation comes about three years after their 2-year-old boy, Kent, died of pneumonia.

The Schaibles never sought medical attention due to their religious beliefs.

Investigators say the family's fundamentalist Christian faith puts the power of prayer over traditional medicine and doctors.

FOX 29 tried to ask them about it, but there was no answer at their home.

And no one answered at their church, First Century Gospel, either.

Neighbors are stunned by the death, but say the Schaibles are attentive parents overall.
