Burglars target elderly widow in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

An elderly DeKalb County woman says burglars who posed as Georgia Power sub-contractors swiped thousands of dollars in diamonds from her. The woman says the burglary happened Sunday afternoon while she was home.

This 73-year-old Tucker widow said that the man lured her to her backyard and started showing her a so-called problem.

"He was pointing out limbs that were on the line, the power lines and he said they were causing problems by fires starting when the limbs connected with the power lines and that they were going to have to cut them down and put a net up," she said.

The retired medical secretary says one man with a hard hat and two-way radio distracted her while she believes two others slipped into the house. She believes that the men had spotted her at local store.

The victim says the man walked to the back corner of her yard, where she could no longer see the house.

The victim says the man got a call on his two-way radio and left abruptly.  She says when she went back in the house the burglary was obvious. She says that more than $60,000 worth of jewelry was stolen.

"I got to my bedroom and everything was gone," she said.

Georgia Power says customers should call police or them if they are the least bit suspicious.

"This happens from time to time. We really caution people to be suspicious. It's rare that we need to come to your door. It does happen occasionally, but look for identification," said Georgia Power spokesperson John Kraft.

Georgia Power says if you'd like to see the uniforms they're wearing, log on to their website.

DeKalb County police have not made any arrests in the case.
