Water rescues abound in Lisle as DuPage River overflows

LISLE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Thursday's storm caused all sorts of problems in Lisle throughout the morning, as flooding forced the east branch DuPage River to run over its bank and roads to close.

Emergency personnel made water rescues near Route 53 and Ogden Avenue on Thursday, as well as in unincorporated Glen Ellyn, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office. Homes are flooded, people are trapped and the fire department is rescuing them by boat.

Nick Ariano of Wheaton helped rescue a friend's grandmother in nearby Lisle. He says the woman in her mid-80s was trapped in her split-level home, which was fast filling with water Thursday.

Ariano joined his friend, Keith Andrzejewski in rescuing Andrzejewski's grandmother, Millie. Rainwater from the yard had already filled the basement.

Ariano and the other rescuers bought inflatable rafts from a sporting goods store and paddled up to the house. They were able to get the woman to safety before police could arrive.

Ariano says she was laughing and in good spirits.

The DuPage River overflowed near Rt. 53 and Maple Avenue into a nearby driving range and across the road. It is shut down to traffic and some area homes are partially underwater.

Fire staff from Bolingbrook and various departments from other towns helped Lisle secure its residents.

As the rain eased around midday on Thursday, rescue crews were able to regroup and get some work done without the rain hindering their efforts. But the rain is expected to pick up again Thursday afternoon, as more storms head in.

No injuries have been reported in Lisle, but FOX 32 News will keep an eye out and update this story if there are any later reports.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
