Suspicious package in downtown Atlanta a bag of clothes

ATLANTA -

In the wake of the Boston bombings, many cities have been on high alert. A number of suspicious packages were reported in the metro area. The latest happened in downtown Atlanta on Thursday.

Police say they got a call from a person who said he saw a vehicle pull over and drop off a suspicious package at a fire hydrant near the intersection of Williams Street and Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard in downtown Atlanta. They say video from closed circuit cameras confirmed the information, and officers were sent to the scene.

The package was examined by a SWAT team and determined to be safe. It turned out to be a bag of clothes and personal items.

Captain Tim Peek of the Atlanta Police Department said they treat all suspicious packages as a dangerous device.

"We want to make sure we go through the steps because we don't want any harm to come to any of the citizens nor the police officers. So, it's a situation we have to pretty much go by the book to ensure we are as safe as possible," said Peek.

Police say they are going to use the video to try an identify the vehicle that was involved and find out why the bag was thrown out in the first place.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
