Cubs amp up security at Wrigley Field after Boston bombing

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX 32 News is still seeing signs of increased security around Chicago following the Boston Marathon bombing, including Wrigley Field. The Cubs are scheduled to play there Wednesday night.

According to a statement, the ballpark personnel will "operate with a heightened awareness."

Specific measures include:

  • Reinforcing safety and security protocols at pre game meetings
  • Removing garbage cans from the exterior of Wrigley Field
  • All bags exceeding the maximum size of 16 x 16 x 8 inches are not allowed into the ballpark.
  • All bags must be thoroughly inspected before they are permitted into the ballpark.
  • Stepped up police presence will be in the neighborhood for the games
  • A canine unit will be stationed outside of the facility.

Cubs President Theo Epstein said his twin brother participated in the Boston Marathon. He called Epstein right after he finished and said he had run a decent time.

After the explosion, the Epstein tried calling him back, but cell service was down. He got a hold of his twin after about 20 minutes, and made sure he was safe.

"It's a shocking event, a tragic event," Epstein said. "Boston is tough enough to get through it."

Cubs' fans paused for a moment of silence in honor of the marathon bombing victims at Tuesday's game.

Rain may stall Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers. But Wrigley officials are taking measures to ensure fans' security.
