Protesters wreak havoc, city council passes Jones Day law firm contract

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

In an act of bizarre political theater, Detroit City Council, rendered powerless under Michigan's Emergency Manager Law, voted to pass the borrowed buck to Emergency Manager Kevin Orr.

But before they did, protesters went bananas.

City council members went running for cover because no police officers were available. One protester was even physically escorted out, while dragging his feet and falling to the ground.

Chambers were eventually cleared when officers arrived and warned the protesters.

An hour later, the council voted to award a $3.35 million, six-month contract to Orr's former law firm, Jones Day. The firm was advised on finances and restructuring Detroit, a job the city council used to do.

In the end, two protesters were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace. But they vow they'll be back.
