American cancels all US flights for several hours

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

American Airlines says it has fixed an outage in its main reservations system that is disrupting travel for thousands of passengers whose flights have been delayed or canceled.

American Airlines spokeswoman Stacey Frantz said Tuesday that the system was fixed by 4:30 p.m. EDT. But the airline expects to see flight delays and cancellations throughout the rest of the day.

Tracking service FlightAware says that as of mid-afternoon, American has canceled more than 700 flights and another 765 flights are delayed.

Passengers are describing long airport lines and frustration at a lack of information from airline employees.

At American Airlines inside O'Hare Airport, the lines grew from one end of the terminal to the other.

Everyone had their own story of frustration to tell. The Hubbards, for example, were trying to get to San Francisco for a school interview.

"They actually told us to go home as locals and try to rebook, but we made hotel reservations and we're going to lose the money, it's non-refundable," says stranded passenger Ginny Hubbard.

"I'm pretty mad right now," says wife Ashley Hubbard. "But, what are you going to do? I guess you just have to take the punches."

American Airlines workers tried to soothe passengers tempers.

6-month-old Lucas Hunt and his mom Chelsea were hoping to make it back home to Dallas. She didn't know when that would be.

"I'm hoping maybe late tonight, maybe tomorrow we'll have to wait and see," Hunt said.

Those frustrated passengers couldn't understand why they weren't given enough information to determine how quickly they needed to change their plans.

"The strange part was they couldn't tell us what was happening and they couldn't tell us when it was going to start working and what was happening," says Deborah Absler visiting from Australia. "So it's been very hard to get any information."
