Armed Woman Surrenders After Hostage Situation

Posted: Updated:
El Segundo, CA -

(FOX 11) Shimeka Lott says the hostage drama that happened in a gourmet popcorn company next to her office was downright scary.

Police say a 20-something year old popcorn company worker walked into Popcornopolis around 8:30 am and took the company's CFO hostage.

The motives behind the gunwoman's action are still under investigation, but for three and a half hours, police say she had people in her workplace scared enough they hid under desks. Most fled on their own and eventually crisis negotiators talked her into giving up.

But, for Shimeka Lott it was the second workplace crime in recent weeks. The last was at a different business, she says, in which a couple of workers got stabbed.

Today there was none of that. It all ended peacefully with the hostage being released and the woman surrendering.

It's a good thing, says Lt. Raymond Garcia with El Segundo Police. After all, the woman did have a gun.
