Neighbors recall 8-year-old Boston Marathon bombing victim

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The young victim of the Boston Marathon bombings is being remembered as a vivacious boy who loved to run and climb.

Eight-year-old Martin Richard was among the three people killed in the explosions Monday.

His mother and sister were also badly injured. U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch told Fox 25 News that he had met with the family overnight.

"The daughter has grievous injuries but is stable at this point." said Lynch. "The mom also has serious head injuries and an eye injury."

Lynch said the family would make a statement at some point in the future.

A candle burned on the stoop of the family's single-family home in the city's Dorchester section Tuesday, and the word "Peace" was written in chalk on the front walkway.

Neighbors told Fox 25's Crystal Haynes that Martin was a boy's boy and that his sister, Jane, was a tomboy who loved to play with her brother.

Tiffany Spearman coached Martin and ran with him cross-country and knows his family well. She said she got the awful news Tuesday morning.

During an interview with the FOX 25 Morning News, Sorboni Banerjee asked Spearman how the family is doing during this difficult time.

"I believe they're in shock and in mourning," said Spearman.

Spearman said Martin loved competing and running. "It was his life," she said.

The children's father, Bill, is the director of a local community group. He released the following statement:

My dear son Martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Boston. My wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries. We thank our family and friends, those we know and those we have never met, for their thoughts and prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember Martin. We also ask for your patience and for privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover. Thank you
