Chicago, Illinois Marathons weigh security concerns

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago's marathon is in October and after explosions at the Boston Marathon, some runners are questioning whether they'll run in any marathon for the rest of this year.

Though some have reservations, others are more resolved than ever to run. 26 miles is taking on new meaning.

Chicago is of course one of the world major marathons, along with Boston, London, New York, Tokyo, and Berlin. The man who has run it for many years told FOX 32's Mike Flannery that despite some saying that they're having second thoughts about running this fall, others are telling him differently.

"I was just on the plane about 25 people that ran the Boston Marathon," Chicago Marathon Executive Director Carey Pinkowski says. "People came up to me and said ‘please, continue with what you're doing. These are marvelous events. Continue to do with what you're doing. ‘"

One point worth of stressing, is that the start and the finish in Chicago are in Grant Park. That's the site much easier to secure pretty tightly than where Boston had its finish line.

As far as the Illinois Marathon in Champaign and Urbana, officials say they will meet to talk about security ahead of their April 27 event.

Jan Seeley is the race director at the Illinois Marathon. She said Monday that some runners and their relatives are already calling with concerns. She said one woman was angry with her Monday for not immediately calling off the race. Race officials plan to meet on Wednesday.

Seeley says it is unlikely the Illinois Marathon will be called off. But race emergency services coordinator Scott Friedlein says security measures such as bomb-sniffing dogs will be discussed.

The event draws as many as 20,000 runners to a series of races at different lengths. That includes about 3,000 registered for the marathon itself.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
