Twins, Timberwolves monitor safety after Boston Marathon bombing

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Spokespersons for both the Minnesota Twins and the Timberwolves want fans to know that ample security will be on site for Tuesday night's games in the wake of the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

Target Center organizers say fans won't encounter any additional changes, but they should expected to be scanned with a wand before entering the arena as usual.

At Target Field, a bomb sweep is routinely conducted before each game in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as Hennepin County officials. Interior and exterior garbage cans are also inspected prior to each game.

Fans were among increased patrols of Twins security, officers with the Minneapolis Police Department and Metro Transit police as the game began with a moment of silence for those wounded and killed in the Boston Marathon explosions.

Metro Transit police do plan to up security for the next 24 hours, adding officers to bus routes and light rail as well as bringing out bomb-sniffing dogs.

While cities across the country are increasing security in the wake of the bombing at the Boston Marathon, officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety made a statement to ease local concerns.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and to the first-responders who continue to work on the scene," said Bruce Gordon. "There is nothing to indicate that any of the events in Boston have any ties to Minnesota. We have no credible or known threats in Minnesota that are related to this situation."

Even so, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Department of Homeland Security are monitoring the situation closely.
