Sheriff saves teen after car sinks into frigid water

ANDOVER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Lois Fritz is now well aware of how close she was to losing her son, Zach.

"I don't think I comprehended what happened. As a parent you don't think the worst until it happens," she said.

Zach had lost control of his SUV in Andover early Thursday morning, sending his vehicle into a deep, semi-frozen roadside pond.

The 19-year-old quickly opened the driver's side window and got out into the icy water before the SUV sank to the bottom.

Had last just enough time to call him mom before his cell phone died – and before he sunk to the bottom as well.

"It was just minutes," Lois said. "Had they not gotten there (I'd) be planning a funeral."

Fortunately for Zach, Anoka County Deputy Chris Pierro was on scene and took decisive action, diving right into the pond and dragging Zach to safety.

The tow company that yanked the SUV out of the pond figured the vehicle was about 15 feet down. Zach doesn't know how to swim well and knew he didn't have much time.

Fortunately for Zach, he was just a bit cold, but otherwise okay.
