CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It has been 30 years since one of the watershed moments in Chicago history: the election of Mayor Harold Washington.

Washington became Chicago's first black mayor in 1983.

The Harold Washington Tribute Committee kicked off a month-long celebration of Washington's legacy Friday. The committee held their event at the same hotel where Washington first announced he would run for mayor.

The city council has named Monday Harold Washington Day in Chicago.
