Study: Younger women don't need to wear bras

Posted: Updated:

Do women really need to wear a bra? A newly released 30-year study shows that no, we don't.

New York women are not ready to say bye-bye to their bras just yet.

French researchers spent 15 years studying the breasts of more 330 French women, and concluded that wearing a bra does not prevent sagging or ease back pain as commonly thought. In fact, in the study the supporting muscles of women who went au naturel had actually strengthened and the nipples were measurably higher.

"I'm skeptical of this study to be honest," said Dr. Kerry Peterson of Lenox Hill Hospital. "The study says that the bras don't work and that gravity really doesn't take its toll on us, but to me, intuitively gravity would pull the breast tissue down if it's not being adequately supported so I don't know if I'm a convert yet."

Marilyn Monroe legendarily wore a bra to sleep to keep hers up high. But what about a bras' short-term day job: keeping things in place?

"If you wear a bra you look better you feel better, your clothes look better and they do help," said Kim Caldwell of Linda's Bra Salon.

So the French study is something to think about but it doesn't seem like many American women will be saying au revoir to their bra.
