Crews remove nearly 50 cats from Livonia home

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

Nearly 50 cats, some alive, others dead, were removed from a house in Livonia on Thursday morning.

Neighbors said this was a situation that just could not continue, especially considering the homeowner's serious health problems.

"That's the worse one I've ever seen.  He's got all the cat ladies beat," said neighbor Kenneth Calder.

The Michigan Humane Society and Livonia Animal Control rescued the animals.  Neighbors said the homeowner is a really good guy, who has a soft spot for cats.

"He is a nice guy.  He's just a little bit cat happy," one neighbor remarked.

"He's kind-hearted.  He just doesn't want to hurt or kill anything, not even bugs [or] mice," Calder said.  "He has mice out in the backyard, and he's got 50 cats in the house."

Now that the homeowner is in the hospital battling a serious illness, it's not safe for him or the cats to be in the house.

"I'm pretty sure they're going to condemn it," Calder said.  "I don't think they're going to let him back in at all."

All the cats were taken to the Michigan Humane Society where they will be examined, and hopefully some of them will be available for adoption.
