Elgin student arrested for bringing shotgun to school

ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 15-year-old alternative high school student was taken into custody Thursday for allegedly bringing a shotgun to school.

Police received a tip about 11:30 a.m. that a student brought a weapon to Gifford Street High School at 53 S. Gifford St. in Elgin, according to a release from Elgin police.

Police worked with school authorities to secure students and search the campus, police said. An unloaded shotgun was found inside a student's locker.

A 15-year-old student from Streamwood was taken into custody, police said. No charges have been filed as of Thursday night.

No ammunition was found, police said.

Gifford Street High School is an alternative school with students from five other district high schools, according to the school's website.
