Violence shocks Suwanee neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
SUWANEE, Ga. -

Neighbors of a man who held firefighters hostage said they had no idea he was capable of violence.

Authorities say that Lauren Brown, 55, faked a heart attack and took five firefighters hostage at gunpoint on Wednesday. He was shot and killed by SWAT team member.

Ozzie Greco has lived next door to the gunman's house for seven years He said he knew his neighbor was having problems, but not problems that could lead to this kind of violence.

Greco said he spoke Brown a couple of weeks ago but didn't see him anymore after that.

Greco saw the firefighters who were taken hostage arrive at the home. He was outside his house when the one firefighter released by the gunman came out... and started telling nearby people to get to safety.

Others, like Steven Hayes, tried to rush home but found the street blocked.

"It's just so surprising that it happened in this neighborhood. You just don't expect that," said Hayes.

Now that it's over, the community near Collins Hill High School will try to move on.

Residents praised the work of authorities.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
