Tortured, malnourished dog left outside NJ school

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A poor dog is being called a gentle giant, but his owner was anything but. The cane corso, who has been named "George" by everyone at the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, was found tied to a pole outside of this school, tortured, and with his ears were cut off. Now animal control officers want to find the person responsible.

"For them just to go basically with a scissor or a razor blade and just hack them off basically straight down to the head -- it's very painful, very cruel," said Austin Clyburn, an animal control officer.

This breed is known as a hunting dog. Sometimes licensed vets do cut their ears. But Officer Clyburn said there is no good reason for it. He said this hack job wasn't done by a professional and was only done for appearance.

"This is more of an image, a status symbol for people to think they're tough, my dog is tough," Clyburn said.

George is malnourished; he's too skinny, dirty, and was just not taken care of, Clyburn said. Whoever did this faces charges of animal cruelty and abandonment.

Lynn Rajewski can't believe the dog was abandoned outside of her daughter's school, which could have put students at risk.

"Not a very smart decision at all," Rajewski said. "Once they're hurt and they're scared and they're left alone there's no telling what they can do -- not because they're trying to be mean, but just acting out in self-defense."

George will eventually be put up for adoption. Already the calls are coming in from people interested in giving him a new home.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
