DPS works to bust bad semi drivers

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

DPS officers are cracking down on semi's that are not following the rules of the road. They are focusing on Interstate-10 from Phoenix to California, trying to make the freeways safer.

It's accidents like the one Thursday morning on the I-10 near Tonopah. A FedEx truck was involved in a crash and rolled over, leaving big boxes and packages everywhere.

This is what DPS officers are working to prevent.

"Make it safer for the general public to be out on the roadway. The trucks are 80,000 pounds driving down the road," says DPS Officer Philip Moore.

The crackdown is called Operation Desert Thunder. Officer Philip Moore invited us to join him on patrol.

"Our main focus is driving hours in log books. If the driver is fatigued it can cause collisions."

He is also watching the road in an unmarked car.

Arizona has an average of seven tractor trailer accidents a day according to ADOT. When a semi collides with a car it can be deadly.

"We are talking about a 5, 6, 7 thousand-pound car vs. an 80,000 pound truck. It's pretty devastating."

That's why DPS officers want to know if the driver is alert and if his vehicle is in good condition. If they are not, the driver will not be driving for a while.

The crackdown ends Thursday night, but officers say they will still be on the look out for problems on the road.
