Chapman Baseball Coach Suspended for Swearing

Posted: Updated:

Chapman University's winningest baseball coach, Tom Terechuk, has been placed on administrative leave with the school's newspaper reporting the popular coach violated university policy and specifically citing the use of profanity.

The Panther Online broke the story Monday and spoke with one current and one former baseball players about the allegations of swearing.

"Baseball coach Tom Tereschuk has been placed on administrative leave, effective March 28 and is being investigated internally by Chapman University's Human Resources Department for possible violations of university policy," the university said through a statement sent to Fox 11.

The university would not confirm the specific reasons for the suspension but the school's newspaper spoke with Michael Newman, a former baseball player and current senior at Chapman who said Tereschuk commonly screamed profanities at him and other teammates.

"He's screamed and cussed at me on the field and called me useless. If a player messed up, he would belittle them until he got it all out of his system," Newman said.

Newman reportedly left the team in the Fall of 2011.

A current player on the team, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the consistent use of profanity to the student paper.

"He has absolutely directed vulgarity at the team on many occasions," the anonymous player said.

While cursing may not be a punishable offense at other universities, the use of profanity is something that can be an issue at faith-based schools like Chapman.

According to an excerpt from the school's code of conduct, students can be punished by the school for abusive behavior including verbal abuse.

"Which may include shouting at another individual or acting in a hostile or aggressive manner," the brochure states.  "Any student found to have committed any of the following misconduct is subject to…sanctions."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
