Suspicious vehicle cleared near White House

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A vehicle parked near the White House that officials initially thought was suspicious has been cleared and streets in the area have reopened.

The Secret Service and police had investigated the car, which was discovered in the area of the White House early Wednesday morning.

A cluster of downtown streets had been closed to traffic and the entrance to McPherson Square, a busy Metro rail station downtown, was shut down as authorities inspected the vehicle.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said just before 7 a.m. that the vehicle was deemed safe and that roads were being reopened. He wouldn't comment further, including about why the vehicle had been considered suspicious in the first place or whether anyone was being questioned.
