Driver plows head-on into fire truck, critically hurt

Posted: Updated:
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -

Authorities say a suspect in a hit-and-run collision crashed head-on with a fire truck that was responding to the original collision.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies were called out about 9 p.m. on reports of two parties who got in a fender bender and were involved in an altercation that looked like it would turn violent.

911 was called, but the driver of one of the vehicles, a Dodge truck, took off before deputies arrived.

As the suspect driver fled the scene of the accident northbound, firefighters from Luke Air Force Base were heading southbound to provide medical aid to the scene.

In the area of Camelback and Litchfield Roads, the truck driver crossed the center line and plowed head-on into the fire truck. No firefighters were hurt, but the driver, in his 80s, was critically injured.

The area is shut down to traffic and we're hearing that man may not have had a license.
