Scottsdale OKs ice cream trucks in city

Posted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

The city council has voted to allow ice cream trucks to roll through the streets of Scottsdale -- something they haven't done for 4 decades.

Ice cream trucks have been banned in Scottsdale since the 70s for fear that they were a front for drug dealers or other illegal activities.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of 18-year-old Leo Blavin, the mayor and city leaders were convinced to lift the ban on ice cream trucks in Scottsdale.

"I was hoping that something like this would just be harmless, good thing for kids. I was shocked that it was banned at first, and Mayor Lane has been very supportive and he agreed that we need to get this to a vote and try and get it passed again," said Blavin.

Scottsdale vendors would have to go through a lengthy process to get licensed to sell food on the street -- they also will get a background check and need to get inspected by the Maricopa County Health Department.

Vendors will be able to apply for a license in the next 30 days.
