Tollway crashes near Hampshire injure 7, snarl traffic

HAMPSHIRE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Westbound lanes of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway have been reopened, but traffic is being directed into construction lanes and is moving slowly as state troopers investigate two crashes that injured seven people Tuesday.

The crashes, both involving semi trucks, happened on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) between about 11:36 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. between Harmony Road and the Marengo Toll Plaza.

Hampshire Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Trevor said the first crash involved three semi trucks and a utility truck. He said one person was trapped in the wreckage of one of the semis for 48 minutes before being extricated and taken to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. His or her condition was not available.

Three other people were treated for injuries at the scene, Herrmann said.

The other crash occurred just minutes later three-quarters of a mile to the east as traffic backed up from the first crash, and it involved a semi and two cars. Two people were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries while a third was treated at the scene, Herrmann said.

Both crash locations are construction zones as workers expand I-90 in that area from four lanes to six lanes.

Hampshire ambulance crews were assisted by ambulances from the Burlington, Pingree Grove and Boone County fire districts.

But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.
