CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 41-year-old Chicago man died Monday night aboard a flight from Las Vegas to Chicago, but the cause of death is unclear.

The passenger, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Christopher Allen, was "experiencing a medical issue during the final phase of Spirit Airlines Flight No. 356 from Las Vegas to O'Hare Airport," Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Misty Pinson said Tuesday morning.

"Our crew provided medical assistance as they are trained to do during in-flight emergencies and they were assisted by a professional paramedic who was traveling on the flight," Pinson said in an email statement.

"We declared a medical emergency with the Chicago tower and called the Chicago Fire and Police departments, who met the flight upon arrival and transported the customer to a local hospital," Pinson said.

Allen, of the 3500 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was taken to Resurrection Medical Center as soon as the plane landed, about 10:50 p.m., but was pronounced dead there at 11:39 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

"All of us at Spirit are very saddened to hear about this customer's passing," Pinson said. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of his family and loved ones."
