Federal officials warn of tax fraud as April 15 deadline approaches

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Federal officials say recent arrests for alleged income tax crimes are a good reminder to the public to file taxes on time and in accordance with the law.

James Lee is the special-agent-in-chair of the Internal Revenue Service criminal investigation division in Chicago. He says recently seven Chicago area people, including tax return preparers, have been hit with federal charges in separate cases.

Lee says his department is aggressively investigating these types of criminal violations.

The U.S. Attorney in Chicago says those making false claims against the government may be required to pay restitution or sued civilly for an amount greater than the fraudulent claims.

The deadline to file taxes is April 15.
