Study: Compound Found In Red Meat Linked To Heart Disease

PHILADELPHIA -

Doctors have long blamed the high amounts of fat and cholesterol in red meat for heart disease. But now researchers have found another substance in red meat that can clog the arteries.

Dr. Mike joined "Good Day" on Monday to explain what researchers found and what this means for your heart.

Dr. Mike said researchers in Cleveland conducted a study with vegetarians, vegans, and people who ate red meat, investigating each person's level of a certain amino acid called "carnitine."

He said they found that carnitine, which is in red meat and also some energy drinks, can harden arteries. When it is metabolized by bacteria in the intestines, it creates a compound that can increase your risk of plaque build-up and heart disease.

Dr. Mike recommended taking a fish oil supplement to help reduce your risk of heart disease, but the omega-3 rich supplement may have an added benefit. The doctor said a new study shows fish oil can help prevent some types of cancers.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
