Young man charged with running over girlfriend

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A southwest suburban man with a history of domestic abuse arrests allegedly deliberately ran over his girlfriend, then told her "Baby, you're OK!"

Taylor Ziyad, 20, of Bridgeview, made the callous comments even though his 23-year-old lover needed hospital treatment, according to court documents.

Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Jaqueline Kwilos said the woman had climbed onto the hood of Ziyad's 2001 Volkswagen Passat during an argument on the 6400 block of South New England Avenue in Chicago, Thursday afternoon.

Ziyad drove off into traffic anyway, Kwilos said. That sent the woman sliding off the hood into the street, where Ziyad then ran over her with both the front and back wheels of his car, the prosecutor added.

Ziyad fled on foot but was later arrested in suburban Bedford Park and charged with aggravated domestic battery and a laundry list of driving offences, police say.

Court records show an earlier domestic battery charge against Ziyad had been dropped just eight days before his most recent alleged attack. He also beat a 2009 domestic battery case when his accuser failed to show up in court, records show.

In court Sunday, Ziyad loudly tutted as Judge James Brown set his bond at $250,000. His victim hobbled from the courtroom in tears, supported by a friend.

The woman, who was treated for abrasions and released from Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, appeared to blame herself for Ziyad's arrest.

"But he ran you over!" her friend told her as they left the Cook County Criminal Court Sunday morning.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
