PHOENIX -

A man arrived at the hospital with so-called breathing problems, but when medical staff tended to him they found a deadly stab wound.

A Phoenix man is facing murder charges Saturday.

36-year-old Jason Gretchen is accused of killing 34-year-old Steve Ildefonso at a home near 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Knocks on the door Saturday went unanswered and a woman who later walked outside declined to speak.

According to police, a fight broke out between Gretchen's girlfriend and the victim. Police believe that's when Gretchen stabbed the man.

Someone involved took the victim to Phoenix Baptist Hospital. They said he had trouble breathing, but medical staff found a stab wound.

Hospital staff noted the tan sedan used to drop off Ildefonso and police were able to track down the suspect.

"Detectives arrived on scene at the hospital and were able to develop information that led them to a house near 38th Avenue and San Miguel. They located numerous individuals in the home. Amongst those that were located in the home was this particular suspect that they have taken into custody," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Gretchen is facing one count of second degree murder.
