Parents Petition for Change at Weigand Elementary

PARENT TRIGGER UPDATE: WEIGAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LATEST TO BE SERVED

Parents at Weigand Elementary School in Watts delivered a "parent trigger" petition to LAUSD on Tuesday.

Parent Trigger is part of a state law that allows parents to petition for change at failing schools.

Parents tell our investigative producer Heidi Cuda that Weigand API scores have been in the bottom of the district for too long, and that the elementary school has been in "program improvement" status since 1997.

"I'm not doing this to harm anyone," says Llury Garcia, the mother of a second grade student. "I'm doing this because kids come first, and this movement is not only mine, it's for all the parents."

Although Fox 11 was invited to attend a meeting with teachers and parents over this issue, LAUSD would not allow our camera inside the auditorium.

Ingrid Vileda, the south area chairperson for UTLA, says the purpose of the meeting was to give information to parents about the teachers' plans to improve the school.

"I think this is a political issue and both the community and the students are being used in a political issue," says Vileda. "We know that publicly we've been fighting to survive in our unions and to exist and we think this is an assault on our union."

Parents say they stand by their teachers, but they say they've been trying for two years to replace their principal Irma Cobian. Calls to Cobian were not returned.

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.
