Napolitano says Obama committed to border security

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the Obama administration is committed to making sure the entire Southwest region along the U.S.-Mexican border is secure, while also allowing for the ease of travel and trade.

Napolitano was joined Friday by Gil Kerlikowske, director of National Drug Control Policy, on a trip to the Tucson area to inspect border operations, meet with stakeholders and highlight progress made toward stemming the flow of illegal drugs.

Both officials say significant progress has been made at ports of entry and all along the border from California to Texas.

They noted how the Department of Homeland Security has seized 39% more drugs, 71% more money, and 189% more weapons along the Southwest border between 2009 and 2012 as compared to fiscal years 2005-2008.
