South Georgia students push for integrated prom

Posted: Updated:
WILCOX COUNTY, Ga. -

What if you saw your friends everyday, but weren't allowed to share one of the biggest nights of high school because of race?

It seems strange in 2013 but students at south Georgia's Wilcox County High School have two separate proms -- one for white students and one for black students. The school also has segregated homecoming dances, and until this year, elected separate homecoming kings and queens.

Now a group of students is pushing to change all that. They're organizing a prom for everyone to attend, but everyone is not fond of the idea.

One Rochelle city councilman told our FOX affiliate in central Georgia that he does not feel a segregated prom is an "accurate representation" of his community.
