Brewer signs bill on use of school isolation rooms

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill into law that requires schools to get parents' permission before putting unruly students in "isolation rooms."

Brewer said in a letter accompanying Wednesday's signing announcement that she views the new rules on isolation rooms as a starting point for a state review and possible additional legislation next year. She called the practice of locking out-of-control children who may be a danger to themselves or others in small padded rooms for hours "chilling."

The bill was sponsored by Republican Rep. Kelly Townsend of Mesa. Brewer praised her for shining a light on the issue. Only five other states didn't regulate the practice.

The bill passed the House and Senate with nearly unanimous support and will be in effect for the 2013-2014 school year.
