Survival kit becomes man's weight loss secret

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Travis Martin started out at 300 hundred pounds, and today he's a 100 pounds lighter, thanks, in part, to his weight loss survival kit.

Martin started with a cooler bag, and made a list of his favorite foods.  Then he went out and bought healthier substitutes for each of those foods. The kit has become his weight loss secret.

There's nothing that rocks Martin's world quite like tortilla chips.

"If I watch you eat those chips, I break out into a cold sweat.  Everything goes into slow motion! As you're eating those chips, it's like you're saying, ‘Are you sure you don't want these?'" Martin said.

In his 20s when he was a 100 pounds heavier, if Travis wanted nachos, or anything, he ate it. These days, he packs his own chips in his weight loss survival kit.

"Whatever it is you love, and love the taste of, just go find a void replacement for it that's good for you," said Martin.

Martin and his fiancee Sasha take their kit everywhere,

"I can eat at McDonald's. I can even have a hamburger, because I carry my bread. Nature's Own, double fiber wheat bread, 50 calories per slice, five grams of fiber. I take the hamburger patty off their bun and I put it on my bun," Martin said.

If they're craving sweets, there are low fat brownies. For Mexican, they use "flats." They even carry their own spray-on salad dressings.

So what do you do the next time you are tempted? You don't have to be super-human, you just have to be ready.

"No one is that disciplined to live on willpower alone. It's important.  You got to want it.  You've got to desire it.  But a survival kit allows me to have fun," said Martin.

Martin changes up his kit each week, based on what he's craving that week. The items are not health food, they're lower-calories or lower-fat versions of the foods he enjoys. If you want to see a list of what's in his kit, visit Beth Galvin's Facebook age!
