Apple Valley church band climbs iTunes charts

APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (KMSP) -

It's not unusual for parents to complain about the subject matter of today's popular music, but a church in Apple Valley is creating music of its own that is now climbing the charts.

At River Valley Church, music often takes center stage -- but these aren't traditional hymns.

Evan John sings vocals and plays guitars in the band that performs during Sunday services and special events. After recording a couple of Christian music albums, the band decided to make one just for kids in their Go Kids youth ministry.

The album "We've Come Alive" was released in iTunes on Tuesday, and it's already hit No. 2 on the children's music chart.

Creative Arts Pastor Ryan Williams wrote half the songs on the album, and he told FOX 9 News the goal was to sound more like Justin Bieber than Amy Grant.

All told, the album cost about $10,000 to make, and they hope to record another album for younger kids in the next few months.
