Teen Couple Humiliated After Movie Date Ruined At Marlton, NJ Theater

Seventeen-year-old Annarose and 18-year old Stephan are just like any other teen couple. Nothing means more to them than each other. They're young and in love.

"We love each other. Yes, it's true," they laughed. They both have Down Syndrome but their bond goes deeper than that. They play sports together and go to school functions together. They're inseparable.

Annarose said, "I am happy. I always want to be with him. He's my guy."

This past weekend was supposed to be a special one. It was Anna's birthday.  Stephan planned a movie date at AMC Theater in Marlton. He saved money from his job at Goodwill Industries to buy tickets and snacks. But the date turned into a disaster before the movie even got started.

"I was feeling upset and I was supposed to be sitting next to him," Anna said.

The couple mistakenly sat in the correct seats but on the wrong row. The theater has assigned seating. The people who were supposed to be sitting there called movie staff.

"We were moved to the back of the movies separately," said Stephan.

Even though Stephan showed his ticket, he said the worker didn't move them to their correct seats which were just one row ahead. Instead he says they were seated apart and separated by two spaces for wheelchairs. Stephan said they weren't able to hold hands or share popcorn. Their parents found out when they picked the kids up after the movie.

Toni Slowinski is Stephan's mom. "I think he assumed that because they have a disability that they would not be able to say after the fact that they were not able to sit together. They thought the kids would come home and be happy," she said.

"Why weren't they treated like any other paying patron at the movie theater?" questioned Lin Rubright, Anna's mother who says the theater eventually refunded the tickets but she doesn't think that's enough.

FOX 29 contacted AMC's corporate offices for comment. Spokesperson Ryan Noonan sent this statement:

"AMC Theatres employs associates who treat all of our guests with the utmost courtesy and respect. We are in contact with Stefan and Annarose and we're taking all necessary measures to address this with our staff at the theatre, and with the guests, including our interest in offering them a private screening at the theatre."

Stephan and Anna said they do not wish to return to the theater. He wants to make up her birthday with dinner. Anna is hoping they can save up enough money to go to a Phillies game instead.
