Kam's Corner: FamilySignal alerts parents to potential online dangers

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Parents, if you have ever wanted to monitor your child's Facebook or Twitter accounts, stay tuned.

A new program, 'FamilySignal' allows parents to monitor kids social media accounts for only $4.99 per month. Parents can monitor an unlimited number of Facebook or Twitter accounts at the same time for the same price.

The program monitors 24 hours a day and instantly alerts parents when there is a potential threat to their child's safety. Alerts arrive in two convenient forms, via text message and e-mail. FamilySignal monitors cyber bullying, alcohol, sex, drugs, violence, hate and more. Alerts include the ability to see the type of danger detected, the name of the child it happened to, the profile picture and username of the person contacting your child, the date and time that FamilySignal detected the message and the social network that the danger was detected on. Contents of the offending message can be clicked on to learn even more details. The program also suggests resources to help parents talk to their children, based on the content that triggered the alert.

On Facebook FamilySignal scans the newsfeed, comments, incoming & outgoing messages, notes and status updates. On Twitter FamilySignal scans all tweets, retweets, @replies and direct messages.

Unlike desktop software, FamilySignal operates "in the cloud." Even when your computer is off, or your child is posting to Facebook from a mobile device or library computer, monitoring is uninterrupted.
There is no contract, the billing is month to month and parents can cancel at any time.
