Jumbo Jets And Passengers: Airline Charging By Weight

Posted: Updated:

For one airline, the sky really is the limit -- the "weight" limit. This airline is asking passengers to step on the scale.

That's right, Samoa Air is charging passengers for plane seats according to how much they weigh.

They have to step on the scale with their luggage, and rates start at $1 per kilo (that's about 2.2 pounds).

The head of the airline says there's no extra fee for baggage now. It just all depends on the combined weight.

Samoa Air says the new policy favors families with kids who used to have to pay the same as adults.

And, as obesity rates grow, the airline is also installing larger seats on each side of the aisle.

Larger passengers will be able to purchase "extra large seats" at an added cost.

Meanwhile, as the size of plane seats grow, plane toilets are set to shrink!

Plane bathrooms are the smallest rooms on an aircraft, sometimes only 3-feet-by-3-feet.

But they're about to get even smaller.

Delta is one of the first airlines to do make the change. The airline says having smaller bathrooms will help cut costs, maximum revenue and add more seats.

You'll start seeing the change later this year on Delta's 737 aircraft.
