8 Tips On Getting A Better Night's Sleep

(FOX 11) Do you have trouble getting a good night's rest? You might want to have your blood sugar tested.

The Journal of the American Medical Association reports people with diabetes are twice as likely to be deficient in melatonin as non-diabetics. Melatonin is widely known as the brain's sleep hormone. When you don't produce enough of it, it can be hard to get enough rest.

Diabetes isn't the only medical condition to be linked to sleep disorders; heart disease, allergies, and anxiety are all associated with sleep deprivation. And of course not enough sleep can make any condition worse.

Clinical psychologist and sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus recommends the following tips:

1) 15 minutes of sun every morning

2) No caffeine after 2 pm

3) No alcohol after 3 pm

4) No excercise four hours before bed

5) Get some lavender

6) Wear an eye mask

7) Keep a "worry journal"

8) Use Breathe Right strips

    A girl from Staten Island apparently drowned off Coney Island Beach Tuesday evening, police said. Good Samaritans pulled Takara McDuffy, 10, and a 9-year-old girl from the water near Stillwell Avenue at about 7 p.m., the NYPD said. Medics took McDuffy to Coney Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

    The Federal Aviation Administration has banned U.S. carriers from flying to Israel's main airport for 24 hours. The FAA made the announcement at about 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday. This comes after two U.S. airlines cancelled all flights to Israel until further notice following a rocket landing near the Ben-Gurion Airport earlier in the day.
