Many Flood Insurance Cases Still Unsettled 5 Months After Sandy

Months after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast many homeowners say they still can't get back on their feet.

Horror stories about insurance claims are pouring in from all over New Jersey.

In some cases, entire neighborhoods are still waiting to rebuild and move back in.

One woman says her insurance company won't reimburse her for the things inside her home, unless she shows them receipts – which were washed away by Sandy.

"This has become a full-time job for me. This is a full-time job. Forget the job I have. But this is my full-time job: just trying to get back home," said Jane Letterman, who lost home to Sandy.

The Property Casualty Insurers of America, a national insurance trade group, says overall the claims were overwhelming. More than half a million filed for damages. Roughly 90 percent have been settled for a total of $6.8 billion.

Meanwhile, it was back to business Monday for a popular restaurant on Long Beach Island.

The Chicken or the Egg has served L.B.I. for well over two decades. But Sandy flooded the local landmark with almost three feet of water.

It took a lot of effort, but five months later, it's open for business again. And loyal customers turned out in big numbers. At one point during the opening, the wait for a table was up to an hour-and-a-half.
