Anonymous FOX 10 viewers donate to paraplegic woman

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Two FOX 10 viewers wanted to help a paraplegic woman whose wheelchair was stolen a few weeks ago and sent us a generous donation. Friday, we got to deliver the special package to the family.

Marlene Lovitt was in a motorcycle accident in 1979 when she was 16 years old. She was in a coma for 15 years. She came out of it and is now a paraplegic. Her sister is her caretaker and guardian.

Last month, the Lovitts reached out to the community pleading to get her stolen wheelchair back, not knowing the community would open their wallets.

Marlene Lovitt's custom wheelchair that cost around $5,000 was stolen from the carport of her home at 35th Avenue and Glendale. Her sister had washed it, then set it out to dry.

The wheelchair has not been found. Right now, Marlene has a loaner that's too short. But some FOX 10 viewers recently sent us a letter wanting to help.

The anonymous benefactors said they saw the story on FOX 10 and wanted to donate $1,000 to Marlene to help replace the wheelchair.

The letter read: "We are in our 70s and get by on social security and it is all we can do, others have it rougher than us."

The generous couple insisted on being anonymous and signed the letter "C."

"I just can't believe somebody would be so nice, especially the older people on social security disability that can generously reach out to help somebody like Marlene... Wish there was something I could do for them," says Darlene.  "We just want to thank them and God bless them and I don't know what else to say. I'm going to cry."

"Thank you," says Marlene.

The stolen wheelchair was not insured, so this is just a start, but they are working on setting up a bank fund for this purpose.

We will put that information on our website as soon as we get it.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
